How to Join Freemasonry: A Guide for Those Interested in Lodge Sir John Lavarack No.110
Freemasonry has long been a fraternity shrouded in curiosity and intrigue, but at its core, it is a brotherhood dedicated to self-improvement, community service, and strong moral values. If you have ever wondered what it means to be a Freemason or considered joining, Lodge Sir John Lavarack No.110 is here to guide you through the process.
Who Can Join Freemasonry?
Freemasonry welcomes men of good character who are at least 18 years old (depending on jurisdiction) and believe in a higher power. You do not need to have any family ties to Freemasonry, nor do you need prior knowledge of the organization. Our members come from all walks of life, bound by shared principles of integrity, respect, and a desire to better themselves and their community.
The First Step: Asking the Question
A fundamental principle of Freemasonry is that membership is not solicited. This means that no Mason will ever ask you to join, you must take the first step yourself. If you are interested in learning more, the best way to begin is to simply reach out to us and ask about membership.
What to Expect When You Contact Us
We understand that joining a fraternity like Freemasonry may feel like a big decision, and you likely have many questions. When you contact us via our Contact Form, we will be happy to provide information, answer any concerns, and, if you wish, arrange a friendly conversation to discuss your interest in more detail.
You are not committing to anything by reaching out, this is simply an opportunity to learn more and see if Freemasonry is right for you.
Meeting the Members & Understanding the Commitment
If you decide you would like to join or if you are interested in meeting more of the members of our lodge, we will invite you to join our Festive Boards. These are held at the end of every meeting. We always welcome people who are interested in joining the lodge or Freemasonry in general, so they can meet all our members, talk, and just generally catch up. This allows you to get to know us, and for us to get to know you.
A Festive Board (also called The South) is a relaxed gathering where we share food and drinks after each meeting. It is an opportunity to unwind, talk with Masons from other lodges who have visited us for the night, and enjoy the camaraderie of Freemasonry.
How Long Does It Take to Join?
It is common for a person seeking to join Freemasonry to attend the Festive Boards for around six months before being admitted as a member. We do this because it is important that we all get to know each other and understand you. In some cases, we may recommend that you join another lodge because it aligns better with your interests.
This is not us telling you we don’t want you, this is us ensuring that you get the most out of Freemasonry. For example, if you are a Scout, we might recommend a lodge that focuses on Scouting, as you would be better suited with like-minded individuals there. Think of your visits to the Festive Board as us helping to point you in the right direction.
Applying for Membership
If, after attending Festive Boards and meeting our members, you decide that you would like to proceed, we will guide you through the simple application process. This involves submitting a petition for membership, meeting with a few lodge members, and allowing us to answer any further questions you may have.
Once your petition is reviewed and accepted, you will be invited to take part in the initiation ceremony, where you will officially begin your journey as a Freemason.
